INTRODUCTION

Dr. Ambedkar is one of the greatest minds of 20th century whose influence has never eclipsed even after his death. Ambedkar is still an inspiration, an innovator of many insightful thoughts and an ardent challenger of Brahminical social order (BSO). These intellectual treasures remain an important guiding principle for the people who are committed to social transformation. He makes an introspective analysis of two basic deficiencies in Indian society, i.e., complete absence of equality and deficiency in recognition of the principle of fraternity. He is the greatest Social Democrat ever lived on the Indian soil in the previous century which gave birth to modern democratic institutions in India.

The Social Democratic philosophy of Ambedkar is located in the ideals of liberty, equality and fraternity, which he draws from the teachings of Lord Buddha. Ambedkar feels that the existence of graded inequality of caste system is detrimental to any democratic principle. To Ambedkar, the caste system, which is sanctioned by the Hindu religious creed, perpetuates inequality, injustice and hatredness. As the contradiction between the principles of Caste and Democracy is growing day by day in India, the relevance of Ambedkar is also growing.
